David Schatz-Mizrahi, EDI '24Design Engineering, Design Research, Physical Product Design

About

From maintaining his car to building a detached garage with his dad, David’s passion for engineering and problem-solving developed from a young age. David’s experience as an intern at a product design company sparked his interest in design research. He believes that understanding a product’s users is equally important as comprehending the engineering behind it. David hopes to apply the research skills, interdisciplinary knowledge and network support that he gains from the EDI program to envision future challenges and develop creative solutions.

Why EDI

David decided to pursue design and innovation because he was drawn to the environment where thinking outside of the box and problem-solving was critical. His interest in human-centered design stemmed from a project that he worked on as an intern. David was tasked to design a rapid Covid-19 testing machine that was quick, easy for the user to navigate, and could be stationed at busy locations. He approached this project by imagining the machine’s potential users and quickly determined that user experiences would vary immensely. David realized that in order to develop inclusive products, design engineers must acknowledge that people engage with the world around them in different ways and it is the designers responsibility to investigate, analyze, and account for this diversity in their designs.
