Expectations and Process
What You Can Expect from This Partnership
5-10 hours total time commitment
From the first meeting with your student teams to the final presentation of the prototype, you’ll contribute around 5-10 hours over the course of 10 weeks to this partnership.
Compensation for your participation
DTC project partners and project participants are eligible to receive compensation for their time and for sharing their experiences with the program.
$0 total financial investment
You won’t be responsible for any fees or costs to participate. Northwestern provides approximately $100 per student team for materials. If you wish to have more costly materials used, you can provide materials to the team.
Proofs of concept prototypes
At the end of ten weeks, your student group partners will present you with four proofs of concept that address your design challenge.
What We’ll Expect from You
As a project partner, you will be expected to:
- Review the online Student & Partner Understandings Form.
- Submit an online project proposal that is user-centered and open-ended.
- Meet with your project team to explain the design problem and introduce them to people who will be impacted by the design.
- Meet with your project team multiple times, generally once a month, for user observation and user feedback.
- Attend a final presentation by the student teams on Northwestern's Evanston campus. At that time, the project concept and report will be given to you.
The Design Process
Design Thinking & Communication students follow a human-centered design approach, including:
- Gaining an empathic understanding of people and their experiences
- Determining project requirements
- Conducting in-depth secondary research preparatory to interviewing people who are impacted by the problem and analyzing their needs
- Developing and evaluating multiple potential solutions that aim to meet the users’ needs
- Documenting the process to create a record of insights, processes, and proposed future developments
- Producing a proof of concept prototype (i.e. models, drawings, and physical devices)
- Preparing a written report and oral presentation to be given to their project partner
