About
Wei Chen, professor of mechanical engineering, established the Integrated Design Automation Laboratory (IDEAL), a research program that develops rational design methods based on mathematical optimization techniques and statistical methods for use in complex design and manufacturing problems. Her current research involves issues such as robust design, reliability engineering, simulation-based design, model validation, multidisciplinary optimization, and enterprise-driven decision-based design.
Chen is the co-founder and now serves as the director of the interdisciplinary doctoral cluster in Predictive Science and Engineering Design (PS&ED), a program aiming for integrating scientific, physics-based modeling, and simulation into design of innovative “engineered” systems. Related to human-centered design, her research team has been developing analytical methods for integrating consumer preference modeling into product design.
Chen serves as an executive committee member of the ASME Design Engineering Division and is an elected advisory board member of the Design Society, a worldwide design community.
