New Award to Honor Excellence in Design Education
A new award given by the Segal Design Institute will honor one or more faculty members annually for excellence in design education.
The inaugural Masahiro and Eiko Meshii Award will be given this fall.
The award was endowed with $250,000 donated by family of emeritus faculty member Masahiro “Mike” Meshii (PhD ’59). Meshii helped develop and teach the freshman design curriculum and advised 45 PhD candidates and approximately 100 post-docs over his long tenure as a materials science and engineering faculty member. Over his career Meshii made important contributions to the field using electron microscopy in the areas of amorphization, galvanization, solid-solution softening and fatigue.
“This award stands as a great honor to Professor Meshii,” said Julio M. Ottino, dean of the McCormick School of Engineering. “By rewarding excellence in design education, we pay tribute to his lasting legacy.”
