Simone WestStrategy Planning Manager at Crunchyroll

About

I started my career in consulting at PwC, helping technology, media, and entertainment clients evolve their finance organizations. Over time, my focus expanded from finance transformation to design consulting, helping clients operate at the intersection of business strategy, customer experience, and technology. Through that work, I was introduced to human-centered design, which changed how I approached problem-solving and sparked my interest in the MMM program.

I knew I wanted to go to business school to make a shift into the entertainment industry, and the MMM program felt like the perfect bridge. It brought together strategy, creativity, and innovation in a way that matched how I wanted to think and work. During my MBA, I interned with the Content Strategy team at Warner Bros. Discovery, where I continued to blend business strategy and creative storytelling. Today, I’m part of the Strategy & Planning team at Crunchyroll, where I explore strategies that can help bring anime to even more fans around the world. And as an anime fan myself, it’s been a pretty fun ride.

Q & A

How has MMM made a difference in your career? What value do you think MMM graduates bring to industry now?

The MMM program made a huge difference in how I approach my work. It gave me a broader toolkit—not just to think strategically, but to approach problems with creativity, empathy, and a design-driven mindset. It also changed the way I tackle complex problems, helping me see the full picture, consider different perspectives, and design solutions that are both strategic and human-centered. Whether I’m working on business planning, content strategy, or helping connect audiences with stories they love, that mindset has stayed with me. It has been especially meaningful working in entertainment, where putting creators, fans, and the art itself at the center is what drives everything forward.

What advice do you have for a student just starting the MMM Program?

There’s more than one path to your long-term goals (and that's both a freeing and sometimes overwhelming feeling). As a MMM student, you’ll be exposed to so many different industries, disciplines, and career paths, and you’ll be surrounded by some of the most talented, creative, and inspiring people you’ll ever meet. Learning from them—through conversations, projects, and simply being part of the community—is one of the most valuable parts of the program.

It can feel like a lot at times, but it’s also an incredible opportunity. Stay grounded in what drives you, but don’t be afraid to lean into new experiences along the way.

Also, lean into the curriculum, especially the capstone classes like Research, Design, Build (RDB). They're more than just coursework. They teach you how to ask better questions, understand users more deeply, and translate insights into action. That mindset has been invaluable in my career. It’s helped me navigate ambiguity, drive strategy, and keep people at the center of everything I do—and that’s the value MMMs bring to the market long after they graduate.
