Corey  King Job before MMM: Tread and Cavity Development Engineer for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company

Why did you choose MMM?

Before Kellogg, I worked as an engineer designing treads for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. I enjoyed designing products that were such an important piece of the end users’ lives, but I also wanted to help decide what users we served. MMM was the perfect program for me to continue developing my skills in design while learning the ins and outs of business strategy. I felt that the combined curriculum of McCormick School of Engineering and Kellogg would give me a unique perspective that I could leverage to become a leader in innovation.

Another reason why I chose the MMM program was the people. As a prospective student, I felt what everyone describes as “Kellogg nice.” Each alum, current student, and faculty member I interacted with was extremely helpful and genuinely wanted the best for me. The faMMM brings this feeling of care and community to another level. Due to the nature of the class size and culture, I knew MMM would provide me with an opportunity to develop deep, nurturing relationships that would last me a lifetime.

What is life like as a MMM student?

The MMM lifestyle is busy, but only in the best ways. Every day, I experience the best possible mix of learning and engaging with amazing people. From running from RDB to captivating talks with top leaders in business at the Hub, my day is packed. Here is an outline of a typical day

  • Wake up around 7 to eat breakfast/shower and read emails before class
  • Attend my 8:30 Marketing Class with Prof. McTigue
  • During my break after class, I usually tackle emails for my leadership roles and homework for class
  • Lately, I have been having coffee chats either with prospective Kellogg/MMM students or with Kellogg alums in consulting to prepare for my career transition
  • For lunch, I usually attend a Lunch and Learn, one of my favorites was a fireside chat with Anna Ball (Kellogg ’83) the CEO of Ball Horticultural
  • Then I have my Whole Brain Communication class with Prof. Franconeri
  • After class, I usually hang around the lounge, indulge in a few snacks, and catch up with my classmates before heading home for the evening

What have you loved about your MMM experience?

In short, everything. From MMM summer to all the Small Group Dinners, I have had an unforgettable experience so far. Every day, I get to spend time with some of the most interesting people I have ever met. As I reflect on the last 6 months, I feel I have strung together a lifetime of memories. The MMM retreat, for example, was another opportunity to connect with not only my class of MMMs but also the second years, who are just as remarkable. I couldn’t imagine embarking on this two-year journey without this community.

Academically, I love that I am challenged and that I can have ample opportunities to choose what subjects to study. I feel confident the core courses of the MMM curriculum are preparing me for the career I want. My schedule leaves enough time to explore the other offerings of Northwestern, which has been so fulfilling.
