Katie  HensleeJob before MMM: Senior Design Research Consultant at Deloitte Digital

Why did you choose MMM?

Before coming to Kellogg, I was working in Design consulting interviewing patients, nurses, and doctors to design patient facing digital tools and I loved it. When I started exploring MBA programs, I knew I wanted a program that would allow me to continue to develop my human-centered design skillset while also gaining the traditional MBA experience. MMM’s unique dual degree program was the perfect fit. I liked the idea of taking classes both at Kellogg and the McCormick School of Engineering and I thought that the dual degree would be a differentiator when recruiting for roles in product and innovation.

Another reason I chose MMM is because I wanted to have a smaller cohort than traditional MBA programs offer. I’m a little more introverted, so the thought of finding my place and making friends amongst a group of 800+ incoming students was a bit overwhelming to me. MMM gives you the best of both worlds because you come to Kellogg a quarter early and build close connections with the 65 people in MMM and then get to be part of the broader Kellogg community with 2Ys, 1Ys, and MBAIs.

What is life like as a MMM student?

Life as a MMM is so fun! Even though I’m not working, I’m busier than I’ve ever been. A typical day for me might look like this:

  • Waking up to a bunch of WhatsApp messages because it’s someone in the FaMMMs birthday and everyone is sharing birthday love in the FaMMM group chat
  • Walking to 8:30 class with fellow MMMs that live in my building
  • Having a catch up lunch with a friend in between classes and maybe going to the MMM lounge for some free snacks and a Spindrift
  • Having a networking coffee chat with a Kellogg alum working in Digital Health
  • Going to a club meeting or a Groupwerk dance practice in the afternoon after all my classes are finished
  • Attending a section, club, or MMM small group dinner or game night

In summary, my days are packed filled with a combination of classes, extracurriculars, recruiting, and social events. Chatting and spending time with fellow MMMs is always a big part of my day.

What have you loved about your MMM experience?

The best part of my MMM experience has been the amazing people I’ve met and the special moments we’ve shared. There are too many to count, but I’ll try to share some highlights: Beach volleyball every week after class in the summer, a 50+ person Fourth of July cookout and kickball game, trolley nights downtown, the MMM Barbie and James Bond themed wedding, many Tuesday nights and Wednesdays spent in Research Design Build class together, small group dinners, and the biggest White Elephant holiday gift exchange I’ve ever been to.

I think naturally the people that apply for MMM are empathetic, good listeners, kind, and curious to get to know others. It’s the most supportive group of people who truly want to help each other succeed. I know that I can count on anyone in MMM to go out of their way to help me if I ever need anything. The program has given me some of my closest friends and I can’t imagine my Kellogg experience any other way.
