Carla ShuteLecturer, Materials Science and Engineering

About

Carla Shute's work at Northwestern is divided between research, teaching, and management of the Materials Characterization and Imaging Facility. In addition to teaching in the Design Thinking and Communication (DTC) course, she teaches or assists with the lab sections for several materials science courses including MSE301 Materials Science Principles, MSE315 Phase Equilibria and Diffusion in Materials, and MSE316 Microstructural Dynamics.

As manager of the OMM Facility, she is thankful for the opportunity to work with undergraduate and graduate engineering students, post-docs, visiting scholars, and through various outreach programs, many high school students. Her approach to working with students and other researchers is to ask more questions than she answers and to encourage independent thinking.
